Why is it Getting so Hard to Give a Rescue Dog a Forever Home?

I fully support Rescue Charities and wrote a post called "Throw Away Dogs in a Throw Away Society" some time ago about the benefits of giving an OAP dog a Forever Home.

I have just read a post that has me exploding with anger and disappointment this morning. Not at the person who wrote it I hasten to add, but at the experiences they have had with doing the right thing and trying to rehome a dog. I have been following this story for some time and was really looking forward to reading all about their new dog this week. Sadly it was not to be...

Understandably when you approach a charity to rehome a dog, you are expected to jump through several hoops to ensure that you are a suitable candidate, you have adequate facilities for the dog and are fully aware of any problems the dog may have. They want the dogs to go to the right homes as it is very frustrating if it doesn't work out and the dog has to be returned to Rescue, and very confusing and stressful for the dog.

This process can involve several trips to the said Rescue Center at your own time, expense and emotion, which you are happy to do because you want the best for the dog you ultimately take into your home for the rest of its life.

So why is it that Rehoming Centers are making it harder and harder for good people to rehome dogs?
I myself was turned down by the RSPCA approximately 12 years ago because I worked part time, even though I had adequate arrangements in place. The dogs stayed at my parents house when I was at work, a bit like Doggy Daycare, plus my parents had been approved as a suitable home by the RSPCA when they were looking to rehome a dog the year before.

I was angry, I had worked in Rescue myself, and had even been to court as a witness for the RSPCA about a Rottweiler that had been sent to me for rehoming. To be honest I felt very humiliated that I should be turned down by such a huge organisation that I had always supported, but I accepted their decision and walked away.

Over the last couple of years I have been hearing more and more times of people who are wonderful dog owners, being turned down when they try to offer a dog a Forever Home from a variety of rehoming organisations, they then give up, as they are so upset that they are considered not suitable.

I understand the need for caution, especially with certain breeds of dog falling into the wrong hands.

Sometimes people don't always have a high enough fence for that escape artist, or maybe the dog they really want needs a lot more training than they can offer, not all dogs are suitable for all people, but if so many loving dog owners are not deemed suitable, then who is?

Whilst all this indecision is going on dogs are missing out on fantastic Forever Homes and doomed to life in kennels, or worst case scenario being put to sleep.

As Christmas approaches, sadly yet again I see so many puppies are for sale  as Christmas Presents! With a lot of them the novelty will have worn off by January and they will be dumped into an already overflowing Rescue system.

We can't stop these people churning out puppies, but if nobody buys them and rehomes Rescue dogs there will be no market for them.

So why is it getting so hard to give a Rescue dog a Forever Home?

Authors Note:- These are my own views and experiences. Any offence to caused to anyone working in Rescue is unintentional. If it wasn't for the work you do more dogs would be suffering long term in bad situations.

A Note to Cesar Millan

"Well done Alan Titchmarsh" are not words I ever expected to be saying.

He certainly took you to task about your outdated training methods didn't he?

Sadly there are so many clips, videos and TV series's of your outdated training methods, that even if you

World Animal Day October 4th

World Animal Day Blog Hop: 10/4

Sponsored by Terri Giuliano Long, author of In Leah’s Wake, and David M. Brown, author of upcoming title Man vs Cat

I've had dogs most of my life, first it was the family dog Sam who was a Lab/Greyhound cross, he was a nightmare I realise now, always escaping and never came when he was called, I would go so far as to say he had no training at all, But he was the most amazing dog, so affectionate and not a bad bone in his body. He was my best friend and confident through those rough school years of the bullies.

Sam age unknown but we had him 15 years...

Cabin Fever

As I enter week two of being signed off work I am totally bored to tears! Being off work is not good for me, my back feels worse and I can feel my knee's seizing up a bit more as each day pass's.

I need to keep active both mentally and physically, and I'm so frustrated with my restrictions at the moment. Went food shopping with Himself yesterday, which was the first time I'd set foot out of the house since last Monday when I bumped into Lesley aka the  Mad Dog Woman of Shackleford.

Luckily I'm the sort of person that is happy with the peace and quite of my own company, I'm usually fairly adept at keeping myself occupied, plus I also had the delightful Badger Boo to keep me entertained, although he's still going out with his Dog Walker daily, as I think it would be unfair to keep him confined as well.

Badger Boo's Jackanory Stories

Some of you may not know, but I also write a blog called Badger Boo's Daft Adventures that is written from my dogs point of view.

I enjoy writing it and it's a small piece of escapism in a hectic life, plus Badger Boo enjoys replying to your comments himself, it's just a bit of harmless, bonkers fun.

Don't Cook Your Dog

Don't Cook Your Dog sounds terrible doesn't it?

But people are still leaving dogs in boiling hot cars!

We have just had three very hot days, with more to come over the weekend.

Cars get very hot, very quickly, and the effect on a dog trapped in a car is like putting your Sunday Roast in the oven. The dog is quite literally cooked alive, it is a horrific and painful way to die!

There is a misconception that if you leave a window open then it's ok. It isn't, it makes no difference at all!

CAR EXPERIMENT : TEMPERATURE RISING

The car experiment was done by Kate Price, owner of the famous Olive the Pug, on a sunny Saturday in July. And the results are shocking! Obviously there is not a dog in the car!

On back shelf of car in direct sun, all 4 windows open.  It only took a few minutes to reach over 50° Celsius

As you can see the temperature rises inside the car shockingly fast!

When going out, please think seriously if you really need to take your dog with you. He would be so much happier at home in a nice cool house than trapped in a car being cooked alive.

Many years ago I witnessed a dog being removed from a hot car, sadly the dog died before it was rescued, it was the most horrific thing I'd ever seen, and I hate to think of the suffering it must have endured.

Ignorance is no excuse...

I stopped a lady yesterday, as she was walking away from her car leaving a Collie type inside. I pointed out it was far too hot to leave the dog in the car, she had no idea that leaving the windows open wasn't enough. Luckily my car was nearby so I showed her my Don't Cook Your Dog sticker, so she got the dog out and took it with her.

Please be vigilant, dogs are relying on you to educate their owners and save them!

Spoilt Rotten

In this house there is only one priority, my beloved Badger Boo I don't believe in dressing him up, or feeding him non doggy treats, but he is part of our family and as such gets spoilt rotten.

He goes everywhere with Himself and I and we look forward to the weekends when we spend family time together. So when on Friday night he started to limp we were very concerned, it was nearly midnight. I had to choose did I call the Vet or leave it until Saturday?

After much debate I decided to leave it until the morning as it wasn't a life threatening condition, as a result had very little sleep as he was whimpering most of the night.

I couldn't give him any Paracetamol due to his small size, as it

The World is Full of Spooky Coincidences

The strangest thing happened today, went for a wander around Godalming with Himself and Badger Boo, once we had finished in the town we decided to walk along the canal to let Badger have a run about for being so good and to feed the Ducks.

A very pleasant walk it was too, so many Ducks, Canada Geese and even a few Moor Hens. So glad I spent the time training Badger it's ok to watch the Ducks and whine, but a definite NO, NO to chase them, as with this warmer weather they may be thinking about nests although I'm not sure about that.

I have always fed grain to the Ducks after a friend of mine who was a Countryside Ranger at Lightwater, said they always fed grain to

Asking few simple questions, could save you heartache in the long run!!!

This post is a copy of an email of a genuine equiry I made with somebody who professed to be a "responsible" breeder on their website... I was shocked by the reply I got, and the "As it's not compulsory, I don't have too attitude"!!!!!! Plus they never replied back when I explained  the questions I had asked in more detail...   A Guilty Conscience, I certainly hope so!!!

####..... Couple of quick question about your pups for sale.... What are the BVA/KC Hip scores of both parents and all 4 grandparents??? Do mum and dad have current Eye Certificates, and were the x4 grandparents screened when used for breeding??? Last but not least what is the C.O.I. of the pedigree??? As I'm not a fan of line-breeding due to recessive genes!!!!!! I'm may be interested in a pup, but have seen a few lately that were't quite bold or placid enough... Thanks Dawn

hi dawn, in answer to ur questions no none of my dogs are hip scored as u dont hip score working lined springers, no at the mo mine dont have current eye tests as its not compulsory to have the tests done in working lined springer (at the mo) as it is with show dogs but i am in the process of getting all my dogs heath tested as im all for it just havnt got around to it up to now... as for the grandparents i have no idea if any are tested... and as for C.O.I. i have no idea what that is??? and as for there charactors there only just starting to show them so dont no yet what they are yet... hope these answer ur questions... #### x

Ok  #### thanks for that, will do some research on Hip Dysplasia in working Springers as had 2 dogs with it in the past and it's a nasty thing!!! The tests aren't compulsory for show or working dogs which is a bad thing in my opinon.. But the law needs to change, making breeders responsible for the lifelong health of there puppies *which will hopefuly put a stop to puppy farmers...* Health Testing is used to help eliminate hereditary diesases, by not breeding from affected dogs!!!!! My Cocker is a working Cocker not show, and all his relations were tested for P.R.A (eye tests) every precaution was taken by his breeders, but he still had it when he went for his tests before breeding from him.. Hence no breeding for him!!! Therefore I had no comeback on his breeder as she had done all she could... BVA/KC tests are open to everybody, my friend breeds working labs and has been testing them for approx 20 years I believe... C.O.I is a scoring system where you can work out how closely in-bred puppies are further back in there parentage, when line-breeding was all the rage:- ie, Grandfather to Granddaughter, cousin to cousin and so on, because of recesssive genes that cause the hereditary problems.... The boldness or shyness of a pup at 4 weeks will carry on through to it's adult life if raised correctly!! Hence why early temprement testing is better for matching pups to owners.... Sorry but in my opinion and lots of other peoples,  Health Testing is important for lifelong health of the puppies and good of the breed!!!  Dawn

After this communication I opted not to buy a puppy from this particular breeder, , this article is my personal opinion, your free to make your own mind up.

Authors Note:-

I would like to add that this person was a facebook friend for several months, and I genuinely liked them. But after this transaction of messages, their personality changed and not in a nice way!

I was inundated with nasty messages, and several of my facebook friends were put in a very awkward situation, and made to choose between me and them.

So please ensure you ask questions when buying a pup, and if the breeder of the pup, doesn't want too, or won't give you the answer you require, then you should consider looking elsewhere for your pup.

Breeders that pay out for the health testing before breeding, have the interest of the pups lifelong health in mind and are not after making a quick buck.

It really is better to wait a few months or even years for your pup, than to rush out and buy one because it is available.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with this breeders dogs, but genetic problems can happen to the most experienced of people if they don't health test their dogs before breeding.

I would only ever buy a pup from somebody, who has taken the time to find out if there are any hidden problems that can be passed on, and so should you. To save any heartache later on if the pup should develop something that could have been avoided by a simple test that somebody couldn't be bothered to do because they don't HAVE TOO!!!

Throw Away Dogs in a Throw away Society

I see it's that horrible time of year again, when unwanted Christmas puppies are now being abandoned to  rehoming centers as people are now bored with them, or can't be bothered to spend a little time house training, so getting annoyed with the mess!!!

Will never understand why people buy these pups in the first place, or even why the Breeders sold them to these people!!!

Oh yes I know why now, people bred their unhealth checked bitch to an unhealth checked dog to make a quick buck, with little regard for the outcome of the rest of the pups life that they brought into this world!!!

Who picks up the pieces???

All the amazing people out there that volunteer and work in Rescue, without these dedicated people, so many of these young pups would end up on Death Row!!!

But to my mind the worst, is people who dump their OAP dog, just because it is over stressed by a playful young pup. The OAP dog

Dog Friendly at "The Snug Bar, Godalming"

"Look into my eyes daddy and order from the sweet menu"

As many of us Dog Owners are aware, finding somewhere to eat out with your dog can be a nightmare, well today we took Badger Boo (our Cocker Spaniel)  into The Snug Bar in Godalming and had a wonderful welcome, it is well worth a visit...

Whilst taking our order our waitress Amy asked if Badger Boo required water, I was surprised but said "Yes please if it's not to much trouble" and a large bowl of water was brought to our table and Badger Boo was laying there drinking it like it was an everyday occurrence in his life lol...

The menu is very varied and the prices are good value, the choice was difficult as there was so much on there we wanted to try, eventually we made a decision after much deliberation, and placed our order. We didn't have to wait long before our food was brought

My Dog Badger Boo

Here's a couple of Badger Boo's Daft Adventures from this Summer

Here I am ready to go on my next adventure, and where have my humans disappeared too??? Remember to train your humans properly so they won't wander, then you will never be kept waiting around like me!!!

(1)
Just got back from seeing the piglets, they's really grown since I last saw them. We chased each other round the field and I got really muddy. Mummy said she couldn't tell the difference between us, and was going to take a piggy home instead of me *barking to prove who I was*. Wish she had left me there now, as I had to have a bath when I gots home 'cos mummy said I was covered in piggy poop *I thought I smelled rather good*. Me and mummies going to have a sofa day when I'm dry and do nothing 'cos she is feeling
