Animals + Camera = Not What You Expect

I love to take pictures of our local wildlife and my dog Badger Boo, but animals can be very hard to photograph, as anyone who has tried will know.

On a recent walk I decided to take some pictures of a mother swan and her grown up cygnet. The cygnet wasn't too keen on this, which resulted in him swimming towards me rather aggressively.

As I had the dog with me, I took the hint and moved back and used the zoom. Soon enough they calmed down and started behaving naturally. I loved the shape they made when preening their feathers so decided to aim for this type of picture. I took many out of focus ones like below.

I did eventually get what I consider the perfect shot, which I posted as my Photo of The Week titled "Elegance"

I also wanted a picture of Badger Boo gazing across the lake for his latest blog entry, this was a lot harder to achieve. All he wanted to do was jump in and go for a swim, which I don't allow him to do at this location due to the abundance of various ducks, geese and fishermen.

I took many pictures similar to those below of his backside poking up as he tried to jump in at various locations around the lake.

These are just a few of my photo flops taken this weekend whilst walking around Broadwater Lake with Himself and Badger Boo.

  4. We love swans. We have a pond near us, and every year we had a pair of swans, come and next, hatch and rear their babies, and we visited, watched them grow and all the locals were very protective of them.
Sadly, last year, some moron let their dog loose near the pond (it was someone local who is notorious for their dog's aggressive behaviour, the dog has attacked other dogs before, the local police have been involved) and the dog went into the pond and attacked the male swan, who was badly injured and died. The mama swan actually stayed on her nest, and all the locals rallied together to make sure she got food (she wouldn't leave the eggs) and water, and she hatched and reared one baby, which is apparently a big thing, they normally don't manage. I don't know if we will have swans again this year, I hope so! :(

    1. They truly are the most beautiful creatures.

I really hate people that allow their dogs to do this, it makes me so angry! Good to hear the police were involved, I hope the person was prosecuted for his cruelty to this little family!

What amazing people in your area to help the mummy swan, it is a huge achievement that she was able to rear a young Cheney alone, eventually she will find another mate, let's hope she feels safe enough to nest there again in future years.
